Willie Maley
Charlie & The Bhoys

Printed with permission by Charlie & the Bhoys.

Note: A song written about the man, William Patrick Maley, who was Celtic. He was born in Newry, County Down, Ireland, where after a time his father, Thomas, moved the family to Cathcart in Glasgow. In 1887, Brother Walfrid and Celtic came knocking for Willie and his brother Tom, and they joined the Celtic team as players. In 1897 Willie becomes the first Manager of the Club. He went on to manage the club for forty-three years until his retirement in 1940. He saw the Celtic through many championships and 30 major trophies, from a player in 1888 to manager until 1940. He brought magic to the Glasgow Celtic.

Willie Maley was his name,
He brought the great names to the game,
When he was the boss at Celtic Park.
He taught them how to play football,
He made the greatest of them all,
Gallacher and Quinn have left their mark.

Chorus:
And they gave us James McGrory and Paul McStay,
They gave us Johnstone, Tully, Murdoch, Auld, and Hay.
Most of football's greats have passed through Parkhead's gates,
For to play football the Glasgow Celtic way.

In thirty-eight there was a show,
Glasgow was the place to go,
A model of the tower was football's prize.
England sent four of the best,
They didn't meet with much success,
'Cause the trophy ended up in Paradise.

Chorus

Coronation time was here,
Fifty-three that was the year,
Another four from England met their doom.
They said we'll have to try again,
But like before it was in vain,
Because the cup is in the Parkhead trophy room.

Chorus

And then in nineteen fifty-seven,
We met a man called Gorgie Nevin,
That game is etched on every Celtic Fan.
Wilson, Mochan and McPhail,
And Willie Fernie scored as well,
As Celtic beat the Rangers 7 - 1.

Chorus

So ten years they had gone and so,
To Portugal we had to go,
To face the team that Italy adore.
Celtic went out to attack,
They won the big cup and they brought it back,
Its the first time it had been on British Shores.

Chorus

And now a new Millennium,
We have a brand new Stadium,
We're amongst the honours once again.
The Celtic fans did proudly sing,
Larsson was the king of kings,
and he joins the list of famous Celtic men!

Chorus

OLDER LAST VERSES

Now twenty-one years to that day,
We find its our centenary,
And we're amoung the honours once again.
Six million Pounds the huns did spend,
But Souness found it was in vain,
Because the Celtic are the champions again.

And now in Nineteen Ninety-five,
It feels good just to be alive,
And we're about to celebrate again.
The fans all cry out for Pierre,
He rises up into the air,
And brings the Scottish Cup to Paradise.

And now in Nineteen Ninety-Eight,
The Celtic fans we're feeling great,
And we're about to celebrate again.
Larsson, Brattbakk, and Tommy Boyd,
And Simon Donnelly and all the bhoys,
Are singing Celtic are the champions again.

And now a new Millennium,
We have a brand new Stadium,
And we're about to celebrate again.
Larsson, Lennon, and Tommy Boyd,
And Martin O'Neill and all the bhoys,
Are singing Celtic are the champions again.
